How to Check the Width of Your Work Boots

The best work boot for a wide foot is wide enough without being excessively roomy. An oversized boot can let the foot slide and rub just as an undersized boot can squeeze the toes and forefoot.

Use the Insole as a Width Guide

Remove the insole, place the heel fully back in its heel seat and stand on it. The widest part of the foot—between the joints behind the big toe and fifth toe—should not extend beyond the sides. The toes should also remain behind the front edge.

Why Going Up a Size Can Create Problems

Boots are shaped around the point where the forefoot is widest and bends. Choosing extra length simply to gain width can move that flex point away from the foot’s joints, while additional internal space allows the foot to slide forwards and sideways.

Width and Support Work Together

An arch-support insole can help fill excess depth and reduce forward sliding by holding beneath the arch. The aim is a stable fit with enough width to avoid side pressure, but not so much room that the foot slips around inside the boot.
