Work Shoe Red Flags: Features You Should Avoid
Footwear Advice
What Features Should You Avoid in a Work Shoe?
Not all protective footwear is built to support your feet throughout a long shift.
In this video, we examine a sneaker-style work shoe to highlight two key warning signs that mean a shoe may lack necessary support.
Bending Through the Arch
A supportive work shoe or boot should flex at the ball of the foot, where your toes naturally bend. If a shoe bends easily right through the middle of the arch, it lacks a supportive shank or stiffener board. This lack of structural integrity can place extra strain on your plantar fascia, midfoot joints, and arch muscles during everyday movement.
Excessive Twisting and Instability
Another feature to steer clear of is torsional weakness. When you can easily wring out or twist a work shoe like a dishcloth, it offers very little lateral stability. This excessive flexibility can contribute to over-pronation or supination, leaving your feet and ankles unstable and increasing stress on your midfoot.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Flexing through the centre of the arch instead of the forefoot
- Lack of an internal shank or rigid stiffener board
- Excessive twisting or wringing motion across the sole
- Unstable midfoot support that can increase strain on joints and ligaments
